The Power and Purpose of Good Friday

The Power and Purpose of Good Friday

Friday, April 18, 2025

Good Friday stands at the heart of the Christian faith. It is the day we remember the crucifixion of Jesus Christ—His suffering, His death, and His willing sacrifice for the sins of the world. It’s not called “good” because of what happened to Jesus, but because of what His death accomplished for us.

The prophet Isaiah foretold it centuries earlier: “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5, NKJV). On Good Friday, those words were fulfilled in the most profound and personal way.

At the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of God’s righteous judgement against sin. The innocent died for the guilty. As Paul writes, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NKJV). The cross was not a tragic accident—it was a divine rescue mission, planned from eternity past and carried out in love.

As Jesus breathed His last, He cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30, NKJV). That was not a cry of defeat, but of victory. The debt was paid. The curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), symbolising that access to God was now open to all who come through Jesus.

Good Friday invites us to pause and reflect. It invites us to remember not only the pain and cost of our redemption, but also the love that held Jesus to the cross. His suffering secured our forgiveness. His blood established our peace with God.

So how should we respond?

  • With gratitude—for the price He paid.
  • With repentance—turning from sin and walking in newness of life.
  • With faith—trusting in the finished work of Christ for our salvation.

Join us at Westside Bible Chapel this Easter season as we gather to remember the cross and celebrate the resurrection. Whether you’ve known Christ for years or are just beginning to ask questions, we invite you to come and discover the hope that only Jesus can give.

Because of Good Friday, Sunday is coming—and with it, the promise of new life.
